The Ultimate Moving Day Checklist
Moving day is here! Follow this checklist to ensure everything goes smoothly.
The Night Before
- Confirm arrival time with movers
- Finish packing (except essentials)
- Defrost and clean refrigerator
- Disassemble beds and large furniture
- Charge all devices
- Pack overnight bags for the family
- Set out snacks and water for movers
- Get cash for mover tips
- Set multiple alarms
Morning of Moving Day
- Wake up early
- Eat a good breakfast
- Do a final walk-through
- Check all closets, cabinets, and storage areas
- Confirm utilities are on at new home
- Take photos of empty rooms (for deposit purposes)
- Gather important documents to keep with you
When Movers Arrive
- Review the estimate and paperwork
- Walk through the home with the crew leader
- Point out fragile or valuable items
- Designate items that should NOT be moved
- Give them your cell phone number
- Show them the essentials box to load last
- Confirm delivery address and contact info
During Loading
- Be present but stay out of the way
- Answer questions as they arise
- Keep pets and children safely away
- Offer water to the crew
- Don't leave valuables unattended
- Watch for any concerns with handling
Before Leaving Old Home
- Final walk-through of every room
- Check garage, attic, basement
- Check yard/outdoor storage
- Turn off lights and HVAC
- Lock all doors and windows
- Return keys to landlord or leave for buyer
- Read meters (electric, gas, water) for records
- Take photos of the final state
At the New Home
- Arrive before or with the movers
- Check that utilities are working
- Direct movers where to put furniture and boxes
- Check items for damage as they're unloaded
- Note any damage on the inventory list
- Take photos of any damaged items immediately
Before Movers Leave
- Review the inventory checklist
- Note any missing or damaged items
- Get copy of the bill of lading
- Pay the movers (and tip if service was good)
- Get contact info for any claims
